Policy Wording 101: A Roadmap To Reading HPL Policies
In this session we will examine the construction of an insurance policy with a focus on Medical Malpractice and Healthcare Professional Liability (HPL). The presenters will outline the basic insurance policy structure, including an overview of the various sections of an insurance policy, unique terms specific to HPL and MPL policies, and considerations when evaluating coverage for healthcare organizations and healthcare professionals. Presenters will also touch on the current state of the HPL/MPL commercial market and how market reactions are impacting captive coverage analysis and forms.

Maryann is currently serving as the North American Healthcare & Life Sciences Vertical Leader for WTW. Her responsibilities include identifying new risks as well as trends in risks, developing tools and resources to assist clients in managing and mitigating those risks, and setting the strategic direction for WTW’s healthcare & life sciences industry vertical. Maryann is responsible for leading the vertical in the development of cutting-edge tools and analytics, providing excellence in customer service, and assisting healthcare & life sciences clients to effectively and efficiently manage their risks.
Prior to joining WTW 20+ years ago, Maryann served as the Southeast Regional Underwriting Manager for the Healthcare division of the Zurich Insurance Group. In her prior roles at Willis Towers Watson, Maryann served as the GA Healthcare Team Leader and the Hospital & Health System Center of Excellence Leader until April of 2019. In these roles, she was responsible for a team of 12 people dedicated to assisting Healthcare and Life Science clients in the evaluation and mitigation of risk. Maryann has 30+ years of experience in working with Healthcare clients and insurance products. Her experience spans all types of facilities and includes working with alternative risk vehicles such as captives.

Annette has more than 25 years’ experience in the insurance industry, over 13 of which have been within the insurance underwriting sector in the Cayman Islands.
Having started her career in Insurance Broking in Trinidad, Annette previously held roles as the General Manager for Risk Management Services Ltd., and Group Risk Manager for the Massy Group of Companies. In the course of her career in Trinidad, she coordinated the placement of the insurance programs for various private sector and government entities and the implementation of a loss control system in Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana and Barbados for the Massy Group of Companies.
She moved to the Cayman Islands in 2005, and joined Island Heritage Insurance Company, Ltd. in 2006 and was subsequently appointed as Senior Vice President / Chief Underwriting Officer with responsibility for managing all overseas Agents, supervising underwriting staff, reviewing and updating all insurance product Underwriting Manuals / Rating Guides / Policy Wordings, setting Underwriting User Authority Levels, formulating underwriting document templates, analysing underwriting statistics, Board Reporting and insurance technical training of underwriting staff and Agents.
In 2018, Annette joined Briat Insurance Ltd, as Senior Vice President, where she was responsible for supervising service staff, reviewing and updating insurance product Underwriting Manuals, Policy Wordings under Lloyds, other insurance binders and underwriting document templates.
